Causes of Epilepsy

Idiopathic: we do not know what causes it. Unfortunately, this group is still significant. It can be very frustrating for the patient and the doctor to not know why epilepsy started.

Symptomatic: there is a definitive cause
• Head injury (also called “post-traumatic epilepsy)
• Stroke
• Brain Tumor
• Brain Infection
• Metabolic disorder
• Brian malformations
• Degenerative diseases of the brain
• Genetic disorders
• Perinatal problems: (during pregnancy)
• Poisons
• Other more rare causes
