Post-traumatic epilepsy program
Director:
Jeffrey Polistky, MD
Program description:
Skull fractures, and intracranial contusions and hemorrhages can all be risk factors for developing seizures. Seizures can occur in the period immediately after a head injury occurs (impact seizure) or after some time has passed (post-traumatic seizure).
Post-traumatic epilepsy requires a multidisciplinary team approach. For this reason, we have put together a specialized treatment team consisting of epileptologists, physiatrists (rehabilitation medicine), neurosurgeons, and neuropsychologists. We also provide the many support systems that brain injured patients require to better cope with epilepsy and improve their quality of life including social services and referrals, support groups, education, and psychological services.
